Respect is at the heart of building any personal or business relationship; it is the glue that holds together the functioning of teams, partnerships, and relationships, laterally, vertically, internally, or externally. Respect for the right to differ is a paramount aspect of healthy relationships, but how this is handled is the trick.

 

The first step is to identify the specific areas of difference. When people prefer to relate in absolutes such as “right” and “wrong”, this creates a zero sum game of “I win” and “you lose.” When situations are viewed through this lens, a power struggle may ensue and the relationship is held hostage to a perceived victory or win over another person. When, however, a situation can be seen through the lens of tolerance for differences and a stated position is merely a matter of opinion, not fact, then cooperation, compromise, or collaboration is possible. Identifying and understanding differences allows people to shift their position from fiat to negotiation with a willingness to listen. The gift of good listening is in itself a sign of respect.

 

Respect leads to accepting a person for who and what she/he is; this acceptance creates an environment of trust, which can lead to a willingness to be open to new opportunities, new collaborations, strategies, ideas, products and improved relationships. If you can accept this, then implement techniques to avoid power struggles and non-productive conflict, which can drain energy from your effectiveness and divert your focus.

 

An Introduction to Conflict Management Skills

 

In this course we challenge you to think about your behavior in difficult situations and become aware of the behavior choices you have when conflict emerges. This course will help you have a better understanding of interpersonal conflict and build your conflict management skills. You will learn to apply some of the basic skills that Mediators use when mediating a conflict, and how you can use these skills to become more competent when dealing with the conflicts you experience when dealing with others.

 

We encourage you to think, listen, and see people and issues on a deeper level and in a different way. We want you to learn how to create synergy and make your workplace and your life more productive, collaborative and peaceful.

 

Throughout the course you will be prompted to visit the discussion room to learn and engage in conversation with others. It is important for you to take the time to review the brief tutorial about how to use the discussion room. The tutorials for the chat room and notepad features are optional, but recommended.

The research we undertook in both the US and UK highlighted a need to make available to those about to leave school and move into work resources to enable them to deal with the issue, should it arise, of conflict/bullying behaviour in the workplace. As a result we have developed an interactive downloadable course for school leavers who are entering the workplace.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The course deals with the transition and assists school leavers in identifying bullying behaviour within a work environment, as it can be different from bullying at school, and how to deal with it. This interactive course has been extensively trialled in schools and has been the subject focus group discussion to ensure its relevance and usability for users and contains information, scenarios and information links. Humans v Robots: Workplace Conflict (in development)

 

Will the future of work be dominated by robots? People and robots will have to coexist and collaborate in the workplace. As we head for the middle of the 21st century, we are experiencing an unprecedented rate of change in society, economy, and workplace that humanity has ever experienced.

 

There is no doubt that AI, robotics and automation will affect jobs. In some instances it will change their nature, whilst in others it will eliminate them all together. This is not a new phenomenon, but it is one that is accelerating, and we must adapt to both new and different challenges.

 

Workers’ attitudes and behaviour in relation to emerging technologies is a key mediator of the extent and the manner in which they are used, It is crucial that employers involve their people in times of technological implementation. Employees should not view this change as something that is ‘done to them’ – but ‘done with them’.

 

There are potentially significant social impacts related to the increasing work-related use of AI, advanced robots and cognitive computing – one of which is on employment levels.

 

The outcome of our activities will be:

 

  • Benchmarking: The Project will need to include some desk based work initially to cover the field i.e. the literature of the issue of workplace conflict and the introduction of Robotics and AI and what training is currently available, what is known and researched i.e. benchmark work on the issue.
  • Analytical activities: Carrying out a survey and data collection activity on the use and value of training techniques in a business setting that addresses the issue of conflicts between Humans and Robots and prepare a report of the analysis and produce a best practice guide - Robotics – The Effect on the Workforce –Best Practice Review
  • Training activities: Development of appropriate and relevant Training Modules for use by training institutions/SMEs with the expectation that they will adapt/modify the modules to their required needs and add to existing business training programme. The training modules will include a self-assessment tools to help SME Mangers identify the issues involved that require addressing - Development of Training Programme - “How to Manage the Introduction of Robotics and AI to your Workforce”
  • Mutual learning, exchange of good practices, cooperation: The promotion and dissemination of good practices of training as determined by the “Analytical Activities”
  • Development of Training/Support Platform
